Throughout his reign Youngjo was constantly plagued by questions about his legitimacy as his mother was a low-born concubine, and because he ascended the throne after the sudden death of his half-brother King Kyoungjong. In order to overcome such doubts, Youngjo dedicated himself to become a king infallible in matters of academics and conduct.
When the Crown Prince is born late in Youngjo’s life, he wishes for the prince to become a king fully recognized by everyone. However, the Crown Prince falls far short of expectations, and time and time again the king finds himself being disappointed in his son.

Born into a royal line with precious few sons, the Crown Prince was a blessing from heaven. As a child, he showed outstanding intelligence and soon became his father’s pride and joy.
Unlike his father, who focused solely on academics and decorum, the Crown Prince was a free spirit who excelled in the arts and martial arts. Having quickly gained a deep understanding of his father’s deep-rooted sense of inferiority, he endeavors to become the perfect Crown Prince that his father desires.
However, the prince develops a deep resentment towards his father, who only continues to push him.
